And, you know, we've talked to people who have given to them, including people who gave smaller donations - right? There's a long backstory there. But he was extremely wealthy conservative in Wyoming named Foster Friess, who had actually run for governor in '18. And it would - you know, and make an enormous amount of money. DAVIES: When Richard Seddon and Erik Prince got connected with Veritas and cooperated on some of these operations, what was the effect on Veritas? They - you know, there's a wide range of targets, and many of them have been exposed. Tell us about them. At the time I signed my [September] declaration I believed Jones Creek and CMNS to be Wyoming entities, but I have subsequently learned they are not; I believe they are Delaware entities, Prince wrote in the document, which he signed from California. The documents also show that, beyond Ms. Gore, other prominent Republicans in Wyoming were involved in Mr. Seddons spying operation. GOLDMAN: Well, again, this is a little murky. In 2018, Ms. Jorge infiltrated the congressional campaign of Ms. Spanberger, posing as a campaign volunteer. Wagner which The Intercept described as a semi-private military force that operates in countries or conflicts where the Russian government seeks plausible deniability for its activities reportedly turned down Princes offer. And if they were given money, if the money was distributed by this former spy, Richard Seddon, and they pulled from that pot of money, which was part of that operation, that could also be problematic. GOLDMAN: To my understanding, there was a disagreement in how Project Veritas should be run. And Las Vegas was the - you could almost say it was the pinnacle, the apex of their operation. Reached by phone, Ms. Halverson said: Frankly, I have nothing to say on the subject. She then hung up. In early 2017, Prince reportedly welcomed James OKeefe and others from the conservative group Project Veritas, which describes itself as an army of guerrilla journalists. That February, OKeefe tweeted an image of himself taking aim with a silenced handgun amid snowy mountains, saying the team was undergoing intense training from a classified location as we make Project Veritas the next great intelligence agency. The Intercept ultimately identified the site as the Prince ranch in a 2019 article. I think it was called "Deep State Exposed" or "Deep State Uncovered." Prince grew up in Michigan, where their father made a fortune in the auto parts business. DAVIES: Let me reintroduce you again. So they were looking to mine that, to exploit that territory. I don't know. DAVIES: Let's talk about some of the people who are behind this. And I think the Intercept geolocated that photo and determined it was Erik Prince's ranch. Prince took on the role of celebrity pitchman, according to interviews and documents, raising money for Mr. Seddons spying operation, which was aimed at gathering dirt that could discredit politicians and activists in several states. Did it expand the number of people that they had? Mr. Erik Prince, a Park County resident and founder of the controversial private military firm Blackwater, is suing a national news organization in federal court in Wyoming after it published an. His attorneys allege the outlet is trafficking in lies, showed an obvious and intentional disregard for the truth and effectively made Prince out to be a traitor. So I thought to myself, why are they giving money to these people, these Democratic politicians? Between 1992 and 2001, Prince often listed Park County as his home, consistent with his voting records. What does that tell us about Erik Prince? GOLDMAN: I believe that O'Keefe has interacted with Trump. But her picture was on this website. Prince provided funding to hire a tech adviser to ascertain the authenticity of the emails. And as I was reporting this, somebody said, well, you know, her picture, you know, she's on that website. They targeted The Washington Post. So while Times staff members may vote, they are not allowed to endorse or campaign for candidates or political causes. So what I'm saying is from Richard Seddon's standpoint, the fact that she had a picture up on Project Veritas Exposed, that was a real risk they were taking, right? He is married to an American diplomat, Alice Seddon, who is serving in the American consulate in Lagos, Nigeria. Funneling money surreptitiously to campaigns through other donors known as straw man donations would violate federal campaign finance laws. So while Times staff members may vote, they are not allowed to endorse or campaign for candidates or political causes. Prince might have approached for money for Mr. Seddons venture besides Ms. Gore. Funneling contributions through a third party is a feature of the federal election code and most state election codes. And, yeah, people steal lawn signs. During a meeting in a Las Vegas suburb last April of employees of Ms. Gores organization, the Wyoming Liberty Group, Mr. Seddon pitched a proposal to build a website where other so-called preppers could buy their own supplies and communicate with each other in the event of what he called a Black Swan moment a major terrorist attack, another pandemic or a civil war. No one tells Project Veritas who or what to investigate, he said. Connor Wroe Southard. It also seems, to me, murky. Seddon left the project in 2018, before O'Keefe started releasing low-impact "unmasking the deep state" videos. But then January 6 happened, you know, the insurrection. You know, there was one exercise, I believe, where they had a cop - you know, a local cop who was there. Mr. Seddons role in the teachers union operation detailed in internal Project Veritas emails that have emerged from the discovery process of a court battle between the group and the union has not previously been reported, nor has Mr. Princes role in recruiting Mr. Seddon for the groups activities. Private property rights are a major cornerstone to how Wyoming operates, but so is prioritizing a rural, quiet lifestyle - ultimately, the former won out in Sublette County. In 2016, a Project Veritas operative infiltrated Democracy Partners using a fake name and fabricated rsum and made secret recordings of the staff. What was this about? McMaster? So somebody was just waiting - and it turned out to be me and Mark - to come along and make the connection between the Sofia de LaRocca (ph) out in Wyoming and "Maria," quote, unquote, on the Project Veritas Exposed website. Jim Mattis, then the defense secretary, rejected the idea. He's a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times. He was asked whether he had provided any of the groups secret recordings of Democracy Partners to the Republican National Committee or any member of the Trump family. if (document.MAX_used != ',') document.write ("&exclude=" + document.MAX_used); The list included John Cox, then the director of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services, and Scott Talbott, then the director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. To do so would potentially reveal the sources identity, in breach of a promise of confidentiality made to the source, and creating personal risk for the source, they wrote, adding Princes real motive in bringing this lawsuit obtaining the identity of [The Intercepts] confidential source is plain., Further, if Prince is allowed to take discovery of The Intercept, the lawyers say they should be allowed to probe Princes ties to Virginia versus Wyoming, since he already has been forced to admit [his sworn statements] contained certain falsehoods.. DAVIES: So an active player in the Trump world. DAVIES: Did any of these result in resignations, firings, criminal investigations GOLDMAN: You know, and in the end, the people who were involved, I think, were, you know, slightly humiliated. You know, I think part of Mr. O'Keefe's motto - I think it's important for him to have regular and consistent content - right? Good stuff, Mr. Seddon wrote back. What were they trying to get? GOLDMAN: Well, that's a great question and one we struggle with at the Times in trying to put this in context. DAVIES: Right. Beyond involving a different pool of jurors and a different judge, Prince may have a better chance of learning the identity of The Intercepts sources if the case stays in Wyoming, where there is no specific shield law protecting the confidentiality of reporters sources. In the case of the FBI, you know, they were looking for bias to see if somebody - they could get somebody to say something anti-Trump, which, of course, fit the theme at the time because, you know, these infamous text messages between these two FBI officials who had worked on the Russia investigation - the FBI's Russia investigation had come out, right? Was he primarily the guy who got this thing moving? Wyoming is not the place for security contractor Erik Prince to sue a New York-based publication, a federal judge says.
