Just spent the last few hours tinkering with my new Archie bridge. WRONG!!! After some research I decided to try out a heavier bridge. The bridge itself is quite nice and the attention to detail is obvious. I cant say that I am getting the sound that I hoped to get from the banjo, largely because I cant quite put my finger on what sound I thought possible or most desirable, and that might be a function of both the limits of my instrument and operator error. What I can say is that the bridge is a great piece of work, tightly cut, symmetrical, nicely sanded, notched precisely. I don't think they really "add" any particular tonal quality to the instrument as far as "highs," "lows," or "mids." The result with regards too response, sustain and clarity and volume is as expected"phenomenal!" I am always looking for positive changes in the tonality spectrum. As a singer in my past years I love and envy his amazing voice. It was a pleasure to recently meet and work with Tim. Oh and mission accomplished on finding a comfortable heightthe 5/8's bridge height is perfect as it lowered the string height just enough without compromising tone and volume. A big thanks to Tim for the fine bridge. Tim received some maple from Town and Country Bowling Alley in Flint Michigan. Bridge was put on a Deering Eagle. The Spillway Dam Bridge is a brilliant design that is masterfully crafted.Don's customer service is first rate too. The bridge is well designed/built and looks great. I dunno about BG usage but for open backs this bridge can't be beat. A true professional. With the Grover bridge my maximum volume was not only much less but the useful range of volume that I was able to control was sort of tight. Tim Purcell . Playing the banjo was much better with the BuulFrog. Bart was again extremely helpful and I exchanged them for two that were the same as the first set but both higher. This maple-maple banjo peels paint off walls! It also improved the balance between the strings and added some detail to the bottom end. But his latest & greatest is a combination of young & old folks called Foxes and Fossils. Too, Tim is a responsive and friendly BHO member to deal with during the purchase process. But just happened that in middle of finishing up mail, a few weeks ago I decided to ping Tim about his thoughts about roasted maple and based on his comments, I fired off a order for his roasted red maple bridges. Extra sustain - perfect for my playing style, at least for a lot of the stuff I do. Fantastic roundness of sound combined with great 'crack'. The third is my travel banjo, a little Gold Tone CC Mini open back. Due to the organic look and warmer tone I see this as a bridge having greater appeal to the CH/Oldtime player. I really like the design of his bridges and the thickness is very good (they have enough mass, but not to heavy, nor to thin) The maple grain always runs nice and straight and most of them have very few growth lines in the wood (which I feel is the key to good sound transfer like a spruce top on a guitar) I would highly recommend you to try one of his bridges if haven't yet (their awesome). I can't stress this enough, take the time to get your measurements right, from bridge height to string width, playing style, head material, etc. My mahogany KK-3 had really come into it's own after I had replaced the stock ring with an JLS#4.
