In Revelation it is also referred to as 42 months and 1260 days which all work out to 3 years. Then, in Daniel 2, the Lord gave Nebuchadnezzar a dream that only Daniel could interpret. The other prophecies were revealed to King Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar and interpreted by Daniel. Suddenly, the boasting beast is silenced by death, and his body is cast into the burning fire. [1]New American Standard Bible : 1995 Update. The emphasis is positive. Alexandra was also intrigued by the profession Spencer was in, which made her want to spend more time with him. The beasts are hardly worthy of prose, but the court of heaven deserves a description of the finest words. Je. This also underscores that these four kingdoms go from reasonably good to unbelievably bad. (7) Who is the Ancient of Days? In Daniel's dream the Medo-Persian empire and it king Cyrus was represented by the bear. A lawsuit could force the F.D.A. The subject of the vision in chapter 2 seems to be taken up again in chapter 7. Daniel 2 (the second chapter of the Book of Daniel) tells how Daniel related and interpreted a dream of Nebuchadnezzar II, king of Babylon. In his night dream, the king saw a gigantic statue made of four metals, from its head of gold to its feet of mingled iron and clay; as he watched, a stone "not cut by human hands" destroyed the statue and became a mountain filling the whole world. Prophecy greatly benefits the Christian because it enables him to see things from the bigger and broader perspectivefrom Gods perspectiveso that when he suffers, he knows it is but a part of the process of getting to glory. As I read through the statements men have made about the God of Israel in the first six chapters of Daniel, I find that what men came to know and to acknowledge through history, God declares through prophecy. The Septuagint renders, "And the king commended that the magicians, astrologers, and sorcerers of the Chaldeans be brought in to tell the king his dream. La Habra, CA : The Lockman Foundation, 1995, [3]Walvoord, John F.; Zuck, Roy B.; Dallas Theological Seminary: The Bible Knowledge Commentary : An Exposition of the Scriptures. What God declares in prophecy, He reveals as well in history. The chapter falls into two major parts. 4:19; Ezk. When Jesus came, He embraced this expression as a designation for Himself, giving the term meaning vastly beyond that previously held by any Jew. How was the fourth beast different from the first three? This takes place until the Ancient of Days comes and judgment is given to the saints, at the time the eternal kingdom becomes their possession. If you need one see me after the service and I will get you a copy. Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. Open your Bibles to Daniel 7. Rose withdraws the power from her chest, which takes the form of a ruby heart that then cracks as Unity dies peacefully in her sleep. It is at this time that all human kingdoms will become subject to God and to the saints in the eternal kingdom, which the Son of Man will establish when He comes to the earth to judge and to rule. Daniel was told that the beasts are kings, but he was not told the identity of any of the kings. Prophecy speaks not only of the joys and glories of Gods kingdom to come but of the suffering and tribulation preceding the eternal blessings of the kingdom of God. Just what this means is unclear, but it suggests this arrogant king not only speaks against God, but, like Satan, he aspires to change the order God has established. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. (1 John 3:13, NASB95)[5] The more we know about the future the more are hearts should be moved to practical preparation. Two major divisions comprise our text: (1) Daniels dreamverses 1-14 and (2) the interpretationverses 15-28. (11) What is the point of the vision? The angels went on to add that the saints of the Highest One will be given into Antichrists hand for a time, times, and half a time. 8 While I was contemplating the horns, behold, another horn, a little one, came up among them, and three of the first horns were pulled out by the roots before it; and behold, this horn possessed eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth uttering great boasts. He will keep continual pressure on the saints of the Highest One to try to break and destroy and annihilate them. In fact, Daniel has trouble interpreting some of his own dreams. (9) What is the relationship between Daniels vision in chapter 7 and the events described in Daniel 5? What so upset Daniel about the future? From the context, it would seem that Daniels distress is the result of the wickedness and oppression of the world kingdoms which are represented by the beasts, and by the knowledge that the saints will be oppressed and even overcome for a period of time. The transfiguration of our Lord was but a foretaste of His coming glorious kingdom (16:28). 21 I kept looking, and that horn was waging war with the saints and overpowering them 22 until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest One, and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the kingdom. The statue had a head of gold which corresponds to the first beast Daniel saw and described as a lion with the wings of an eagle. Remember Daniel was in his 60s when he received this revelation. Wherever I see the Scriptures speak of the coming kingdom of God, I find suffering closely associated with it. Our study of this chapter will isolate what troubled Daniel about the future. (1) Prophecy is necessary because God has chosen to settle His accounts with men slowly. Who is the Son of Man? Usually it refers to a person as a human being. The boastful beast becomes even more aggressive, waging war with the saints and even overpowering them. The prophecy of Daniel 11 includes amazing details about great empires, political developments and end-time powers that would affect the Jews and all people today. God will establish His kingdom, and that kingdom, unlike the kingdoms of men, is eternal. We could never predict the goals God has determined, nor the means He has ordained for history to reach them. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief; 5 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. The gap is not the prophets problem; it is ours. Considering this text has changed my opinion about the gap in the prophecies of the Old Testament. Gogglebox star Stephen explained the reason for him and husband Daniel Lustif missing the show on Instagram. The horn of the beast that made war against the saints was one of 10 kings who prevailed until the Ancient of days came and judged against him in favor of the saints. 74 The personal cost of receiving divine revelation is never underestimated in the Old Testament (cf. (13) In some sense, the last kingdom is still on-going. The statue represented the kingdoms of the earth. Alexander the Great's empire and its divisions after his death were predicted long in advance in Daniel 11. (3) This chapter contains the major segment of Daniel, which is primarily prophetic, although it does not contain the first prophecy in the Book of Daniel. The coming of the Son of Man is represented as one coming, and not two. History has shown this to be true in the past, and prophecy assures us that it will be true in the future. The vision comes to Daniel in Belshazzars first year.78 A subsequent and related vision comes to him in this kings third year (see 8:1). Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. The saints should also expect the wicked to prosper, for a season. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts were greatly alarming me and my face grew pale, but I kept the matter to myself.. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 1:17) that Daniel had understanding in dreams; and here we have an early and eminent instance of it, which soon made him famous in the court of Babylon, as Joseph by the same means came to be so in the court of Egypt. Chapter 7 reveals in broad terms what the future holds. The saints should neither believe nor behave on the basis of how things appear to be (the wicked prospering and prevailing over the righteous). Public sentiment was turning against this foreign religion, and the Babylonians, including Belshazzar, wanted a return to their old time religion the pagan worship of the gods of Babylon. He is more beastly in the beginning and more human in the end, paralleling the character of Nebuchadnezzar. These are the things Daniel sees in the vision. (10) Daniels preoccupation is with the last beast, rather than the first three. These were represented by the image of a statue. As we move into the second half of Daniel 7 and begin to dissect Daniels dream with the help of Gods Word and the help of history past because some of this dream which was yet future for Daniel is past history for us. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven. The blasphemous horn of Daniel 7, which goes so far as to oppose the people of God, is suddenly taken by death, and his kingdom is removed. May the Spirit of God reveal the meaning of this prophecy to us and produce in us that which God desires to His glory and our good. Thirdly (and most importantly), the prophecies of Daniel mean exactly what God says they mean, nothing more and nothing less. A number of lessons from our text have broad application to our thinking and conduct as Christians. The beast was lifted up and made to stand like a man. During those days the revived Roman empire will be ruled by a confederation of ten kings as described by the ten toes of the statue of Daniel 2 and the ten horns of Daniels dream. 2 Daniel said, I was looking in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. Old Testament Jews would likely regard the reference to the Son of Man in Daniel 7 as a reference to the Messiah, although they would probably not understand Him to be both divine and human. We are not to base our thinking and actions on circumstances, but upon the Scriptures. Consider the birth of a child, remembering that Gods deliverance and salvation is likened to birth. a. This beast is also unique among the four in that he grows 11 horns. Nebuchadnezzar was the first ruler of Babylon to have contact with Daniel. "He's home just in time for #gogglebox we are not on this week as Daniels been away . Until Gods eternal kingdom is established, kingdoms will progress from bad to worse. At least the final portion of chapter 7 has not been fulfilled. This horn Daniel says was also waging war against the saints and overpowering them until the Ancient of Days came and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest One. The second is Daniel's dream. This scene in Daniel is also similar to a prophecy recorded in the Book of Revelation: 4 and they worshiped the dragon, because he gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?. That dream was read as our Scripture reading this morning. The wrenching off of the wings and the transformation of the lion, making him stand on two legs and giving him the mind of a man was a picture of God humbling Nebuchadnezzar and then restoring him to his right mind, you can read about this in Daniel 4. Rather than publish what he had learned he kept it to himself, until that time that the Holy Spirit guided him to write down and reveal what he had learned to the saints. The angel told Daniel that at the end of those three and a half years the court would sit for judgment and the dominion (a word in Aramaic that means kingdom or empire and the citizens or subjects of that empire) would be taken away from the Antichrist, and the Antichrist and his followers will be annihilated and destroyed forever. God would strike him down suddenly too and bring his kingdom to a swift end. From an eternal perspective, the coming of Christ and His kingdom is but one coming. It should be remembered that many narratives of scripture are related in a very condensed form, fuller details being added afterwards. Through the vision of a magnificent, awe-inspiring statue, God reveals the future for Gentile kings and their kingdoms. As the beast continues to boast, a second scene commences in Daniels vision, and for a period of time both scenes run simultaneously. When He came with His kingdom, they would be sure to recognize Him (24:27). He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. La Habra, CA : The Lockman Foundation, 1995, [7]New American Standard Bible : 1995 Update. A look through the Scriptures shows that Daniels response to the prophecies he received was not unique. Choosing his words tactfully, Daniel asks Arioch why the king has made such a decree. Never in the history of the Roman empire has this happened so it is yet future. The toasting of the gods of the Babylonians with the sacred temple vessels, recorded in chapter 5, may have been Belshazzars final act of blasphemy. He intends to make changes in time and in law. Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints (Revelation 13:1-10). Each beast has its own unique characteristics. The message of this prophecy is really quite simple and may be summed up this way. See John F. Walvoord, Daniel: The Key to Prophetic Revelation (Chicago: Moody Press, 1971), p. 149. 1. Note these general observations about our passage before we turn to a more detailed study. (5) Prophecy is not written as hype but revealed to produce the hope of glory and endurance in present tribulation. Daniel 2: Nebuchadnezzar's Dream by Larry Murray King Nebuchadnezzar had a puzzling dream that no one could explainuntil God gave the interpretation to Daniel. The third portion of the statue in Daniel 2 was the belly and thighs of bronze which represented the Greek empire. The beasts emerge out of chaos and confusion; the heavenly court is calm and dignified. Daniels response is testimony to this reality. (7) No identification is made of the saints as Jews or Gentiles. There seems to be no Jewish nationalistic emphasis here, as there will be later.75. Humanly speaking, it was impossible for them to have a child. Daniel 7 indicates in the clearest way that prior to the coming of the kingdom of God the saints will suffer at the hand of the final horn and even be overpowered by him. Upon hearing the details of the dream, Daniel too was troubled (4:19). (4) Suffering is to be expected by the saints, before they enter into the glorious kingdom of God. Those who rejected the Lord Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of Man, would mourn when they saw Him returning in the clouds: And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory (Matthew 24:30). Nebuchadnezzar became distressed when he received his first night vision (2:1) because he did understand some of his dream. The prophecies of Daniel 7 speak of a future day of reckoning, foreshadowed by the actions of Belshazzar and the judgment of God on him and his kingdom. When the Lord Jesus Christ came to earth, having added perfect humanity to His undiminished deity, He spoke of Himself very often as the Son of Man. In the Gospels, Jesus began not only to identify Himself as the Messiah, the promised Son of Man, but also to explain all that this involved. This vision was an interactive vision, as Daniel was not only present in the vision but was able to approach one standing by to ask the meaning of what he saw. The second time, the expression is used in reference to Daniel himself, as it will be used very frequently in Ezekiel to refer to this great prophet: So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face; but he said to me, Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end (Daniel 8:17). An eleventh king then rises to power, different from the others, replacing three of the previous kings. Daniel was terrified or alarmed by the scenes he had seen in his mind and desired to understand what they meant. His final offspring, so to speak, is the little horn which becomes the great blasphemer, whose life and kingdom is suddenly cut off by the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man. The Son of Man was also Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:8). Generally, it is agreed that this beast represents the Babylonian empire and king Nebuchadnezzar in particular. It is virtually the opposite of the term beast. The expression, Son of man, is not new to Daniel. Remember he had seen the innumerable host of angels attending the Ancient of Days. Robert L. (Bob)Deffinbaugh graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary with his Th.M. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed. (6) How important is it for us to identity the kings and the kingdoms mentioned in our text? The woman endures in the view of the final outcome of the process. With the death of Nebuchadnezzar comes a change in the peoples attitudes, especially their leaders toward Judaism. This fourth beast has the distinction of ten horns. The identity of the kingdoms represented by the other body parts and metals was not revealed. The death of this king brings about the end of his kingdom. Daniel 2:26-49 I have heard a number of attempts to explain the gaps in Old Testament prophecy. The angel goes on to describe what the Antichrist will do: He will speak out against the Most High, he will be boastful and arrogant, he will deny that the Most High is God, he will deny that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Different from the first three, this beast seems uglier, more powerful, and much more hostile toward God and His saints. This was when his life took a sharp turn. Daniel described the beast as having iron teeth and that it devours, crushes, and tramples under its feet all that stands in its way. With the commencement of Belshazzars co-regency may have come not only a rejection of the Jewish faith and worship, but a new wave of persecution directed toward it. (9) The interpretation of Daniels vision comes in two parts, beginning with a general interpretation and then a more specific one based on Daniels questions. It therefore seems that the two prophecies speak of the same four kingdoms by means of different imagery. Some people have a rather irreverent attitude toward prophecy, they approach it as a pastime and they delight in figuring out complex date schemes and drawing detailed diagrams of the future. The first beast was lion-like, with wings like that of an eagle.79 Its wings were plucked from it; if this happened in mid-air, he must have plummeted to the ground. March 1, 2023, 6:00 a.m. When the Lord Jesus came to the earth, He often referred to Himself as the Son of Man, gradually making it clear that He was the Messiah who was God incarnate. 13 And he performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men. They will serve and obey Him forever. The final push of the times of the Gentiles will last for 3 years, then the end will come, the end of the times of the Gentiles., THE JUDGMENT AND THE FIFTH KINGDOM (Daniel 7:26-27). 12 and he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. The kingdom of God will be established and the saints will possess it forever. Belshazzar came to power several years after the death of Nebuchadnezzar and seems to have turned completely away from the God of Israel. Before the kingdom of God is established on the earth, four earthly kingdoms will rise and fall. For this reason, I wish to clearly state the foundational presuppositions and principles on which this exposition of Daniel is based. Should we be troubled as well? Then the kingdoms of the earth, the sovereignty, the dominion, the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heavens, in other words, the whole world will be given to the saints of the Highest One and the Highest One, Jesus Christ, will rule and it will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him. 17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. If we go back to Daniel 2 and look at the statue in Nebuchadnezzars dream, we find that it too represented four kings and their kingdoms. God stirred up the sea, and from its foaming, raging waters came forth four horrifying beasts. Whether liberal or conservative, our conclusions grow out of the premises and presuppositions governing the process and the product of our interpretation. Many Old Testament prophets shared Daniels distress as a result of the prophecies they received and often conveyed to others.74 Why does the prophecy of Daniel 7 cause this godly man so much consternation? A true account of what happened can only be gathered by reading Daniel 2:18; Daniel 2:28 by the side of this verse. So the king spoke, and said, "Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its interpretation trouble you." Daniel writes that at this point the revelation was ended. God answered Daniel's prayer, and Daniel praised the Lord (Dan 2:19-23). ET. He surpasses those before him by speaking boastfully, then blaspheming, and finally seeking to overthrow Gods order. Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonished for a time, and his thoughts troubled him. 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 states, For they themselves report about us what kind of a reception we had with you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come. (1 Thessalonians 1:910, NASB95)[6] Finally, the more we know about the future, the more our hearts should be moved to prayerful petition for those who will face the judgment of God if they do not turn in faith to Jesus Christ. The statue has four parts; there are four beasts. Daniel was given several prophetic dreams & visions; and in the seventh chapter of his writings, he records his dream of the Four Beasts, and the interpretation thereof given by an angel. This vision demonstrates the succession of kingdoms and is the very framework of all prophesy regarding the violent opposition against the Kingdom of God - waged by the Kingdom of Satan, who is allowed to . (1) The Book of Daniel is a part of the Holy Scriptures, and thus inspired, accurate, and trustworthy. Prophecy is always practical and relevant to the person(s) receiving it. In more detail, the outline would be as follows: (2) The Divine Interpretation verses 15-28. This is consistent with God's propensity to use miracles to identify His messengers. Daniel himself had many dreams and visions, mostly related to future kingdoms of the world and the . The last kingdom has at least eleven kings. Daniel said the king's dream was about a giant statue that was destroyed by a stone cut out of a mountain. He will also send forth His angels to gather those who do not belong in His kingdom (12:41). In his interpretation of the dream, Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar he was the head of gold. The revelation of the writing on the banquet hall wall, already described in chapter 5, actually happened later, on the last day of Belshazzars life. In chapter 2 we read that Nebuchadnezzar was troubled and terrified by his dream, we read here in verse 15 that Daniel was distressed in his spirit because he knew that God had just shown him a panorama of tremendous events yet future and Daniels distress was his lack of understanding his dream. He will persecute and oppress the saints of the Highest One, the angel says that he will wear them down; the idea comes from the concept of wearing out a garment until it is threadbare. When the court sits for judgment, his dominion is taken from him and he is destroyed forever. These kingdoms go from bad to worse. In a similar way, Belshazzar becomes blasphemous and is suddenly removed by God for his wickedness. The fourth beast is a fourth king, different than the others. The king knew that Daniel spoke the truth. He had lived through the overthrow of his people, his nation, and his hometown by a foreign power, he had been torn from his family and carried off into captivity. - As for these four children, God gave them knewledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.Or, as the words might be more accurately rendered, "these lads, the four of them" (Ezekiel 1:8-10).This indicates that somehow they were separated off into a quaternion. The angel went on in this summary to tell Daniel that the saints of the Highest One would receive the kingdom and possess it forever. Are we supposed to discover their identity? 11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire. (5) Above all, the prophecy in this chapter means precisely what God says it means in this text, nothing more and nothing less. The scene of the four beasts arising from the sea, which Daniel saw in his night vision, is strikingly similar to the account found in the 13th chapter of Revelation: 1 And he stood on the sand of the seashore, and I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. The use of the word time in Daniel is understood to be years. Abraham and Sarah were elderly and childless. But in the end, God will judge the wicked and establish His kingdom for His saints. 1. (3) The finest commentary on the prophecy of Daniel 7 comes from our Lord Himself. Daniel 2:1-13 - Nebuchadnezzar's Dream. As Daniel watches, the wings are torn off the beast, and the creature stands erect like a man and a human mind is given to it. Peter reminds us of Gods patience, but His patience has a determined end. (3) These prophecies must be understood in light of their historical background as provided in Daniel, in the inspired revelation provided by other portions of Scripture, and the cautious use of supplementary information by reliable historical documents or study. In His response to the demand of the high priest, Jesus directly claimed to be the promised Messiah. The beasts are a horrifying and frightening sight; the heavenly court scene is one of regal splendor and beauty. Daniels first inner turmoil occurs in chapter 7. 31-35). If taken seriously, we will find the future sobering as well. Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers, OT Prophets: Daniel 2:16 Daniel went in and desired (Dan. As Daniel continues to watch, another horn emerges, as three of the other horns are plucked out by the roots to make room for it. Our Lords first coming happened over a period of more than 30 years, and yet we view this as one coming. It should give you a caring heart toward the unsaved as you seek to win them to the Lord. Nothing has caused him to panic or depart from his faith and practice as a godly Jew. The reign of Belshazzar was, in some measure, a foretaste of what was yet to come in full measure during the reign of the fourth beast, especially of the eleventh horn. The ten horns are of interest to him, but most of all that final horn which arose, surpassing and replacing three others and speaking boastfully. At the outset of the account of his vision, Daniel wants his reader to know the historical context in which this prophecy was given and to consider its interpretation and application in the light of that context. Then He said to me, Son of man, stand on your feet that I may speak with you! (Ezekiel 2:1). Editing allows an author to set aside details which are not significant and focus on the essence of the message he is trying to communicate. 26 But the court will sit for judgment, and his dominion will be taken away, annihilated and destroyed forever. As the saints suffer at the hands of the wicked, it may appear all hope is lost. If you remember from two weeks ago the bear was raised up on one side, this was to indicate that one part of this united kingdom overshadowed the other portion. Nebuchadnezzar became distressed when he received his first night vision (2:1) because he did understand some of his dream. The fulfillment of the prophecy of Belshazzars demise underscores the certainty of the fulfillment of Daniels vision in the last days. We should note Daniels distress in chapter 7 before turning to the other prophecies in Daniel, where we will find that prophecy very often produces distress.
